A neural oscillator model of speech timing and rhythm

چکیده
This paper introduces the Neural Oscillator Model of Speech Timing and Rhythm (NOMSTR), which is designed to be a flexible tool for investigating the systems which affect speech rhythm and timing through simulation. NOMSTR is an artificial neural network (ANN) model which incorporates oscillators, inspired by central pattern generators (CPGs), a type of neural circuit which underlies other types of patterned motor behavior in animals. NOMSTR uses three oscillators paired with thresholded nodes to model three levels of prosodic structure (e.g. syllables, accents, and phrases). In addition to setting the periods and phases of the oscillators to represent syllable and phrase durations, the weights between the thresholded nodes can be adjusted to model interactions between prosodic levels and their durational effects (e.g. preboundary lengthening). In this paper I demonstrate NOMSTR’s ability to simulate the prosodic structure of spontaneous utterances in English and French, languages with disparate prosodic systems. The accuracy of NOMSTR’s simulated prosodic structures is tested through its ability to simulate syllable durations, the locations of accents and phrase boundaries, and the influence of accenting and boundaries on syllable durations.

Measuring speech rhythm variation in a model-based framework
A coupled-oscillators-model-based method for measuring speech rhythm is presented. This model explains crosslinguistic differences in rhythm as deriving from varying degrees of coupling strength between a syllable oscillator and a phrase stress oscillator. The method was applied to three texts read aloud in French, in Brazilian and European Portuguese by seven speakers. The results reproduce th...
متن کاملA Nonlinear Autoregressive Model with Exogenous Variables Neural Network for Stock Market Timing: The Candlestick Technical Analysis
In this paper, the nonlinear autoregressive model with exogenous variables as a new neural network is used for timing of the stock markets on the basis of the technical analysis of Japanese Candlestick. In this model, the “nonlinear autoregressive model with exogenous variables” is an analyzer. For a more reliable comparison, here (like the literature) two approaches of Raw-based and Signal-ba...
متن کاملModeling Motor Planning in Speech Production Using the Neural Engineering Framework
Background: Currently, there exists no comprehensive and biologically inspired model of speech production that utilizes spiking neuron. Goal: We introduce a speech production model based on a spiking neuron approach called the Neural Engineering Framework (NEF). Using the NEF to model temporal behavior at the neural level in a biologically plausible way, we present a model of the temporal coord...
متن کاملRole of STDP in regulation of neural timing networks in human: a simulation study
Many physiological events require an accurate timing signal, usually generated by neural networks called central pattern generators (CPGs). On the other hand, properties of neurons and neural networks (e.g. time constants of neurons and weights of network connections) alter with time, resulting in gradual changes in timing of such networks. Recently, a synaptic weight adjustment mechanism has b...
